Walmart is giving 90-day notice to hundreds of workers at U.S. fulfillment centers as the retail giant is cutting back and eliminating night and weekend workforces.
The news, according to a Reuters report, may herald the beginning of layoffs at other brick-and-mortar retailers which also have hefty e-commerce business channels and amidst concern about a recession hitting this year The work reduction at the five e-commerce fulfillment centers comes on the heels of major tech companies announcing big layoffs, including Amazon which just increased its layoff number.
“We recently adjusted staffing levels to better prepare for the future needs of customers,” Walmart said in a statement.
Walmart is the largest U.S. private employer with about 1.7 million employees.
